Spotted! New Banksy piece in London?
He’s only gone and done it again, or has he…? Just imagine being the first person to discover one of his stencils. Reports are trickling in of a brand new and unmistakeable doodle by Banksy, which mysteriously appeared recently on the side of a building in Mayfair.
We’re digging the alleged new Banksy piece; it has been talked about as his reaction to the USA’s infamous Black Friday, judging by the date it appeared (Sunday 20th November 2011). Although, not dissimilar to the poor subject matter, die-hard fans have dived head first into the ambiguous pool of interpretation. To us it looks like the ‘shop til you drop’ mentality is starting to get the better of our growing desperate and vulnerable consumer society. The works were unleashed on us at the perfect time of the year, before Christmas and in the midst of financial saga upon saga.
And let’s not forget the scribble underneath the stencil, “COPS AGAINST CUTS * The G=Good Cops.” Could this be a belated protest to the looters of the summer riots in the wake of Cameron’s threat of police cuts? Who knows, we reckon this is only the start of the debate, and that’s the beauty of it: will we ever nail the meaning? Having said that, give it a few more years and they’ll be discussing this in GCSE Art.
Here’s more of his stuff, it’s everywhere.
