The Poster Generation
Hasn't cinema significantly changed over the past thirty years? We reckon this is largely down to the advent of numerous snazzy digital technologies and the way we view films these days [legal or not], not to mention their ease of availability. However one thing has remained constant and, if anything, has only been reinforced despite much mutation. We’re talking about fan-made posters.
Actually, let’s talk about Olly Moss for a kick-off. An astonishingly adept and already accomplished designer, who was asked to create a poster for a special screening of An American Werewolf in London, celebrating its 30th anniversary. Speaking as fans of Mr Moss, it’s easy to recognise the simplistic yet astutely effectual pieces, similar to that of the concepts for his other projects: Friends With Benefits, The Great Dictator, Die Hard, Jackie Brown, Star Wars, Dirty Harry… I could go on. He was even asked to design the box art for PS3’s Resistance 3. So ingenious has his work proven to be, I sure as hell wouldn’t want to release a film of my own making without his aid.
Which brings us to the similar works of LaBoca. Taking a leaf out of Moss’s book, they designed a range of posters for Black Swan, to coordinate with its release last year. LaBoca, who are a Portobello-based design studio, were asked by 20th Century Fox, no less, to produce a few teasers. Influenced by Polish and Czech posters of the 60s and 70s, they created each teaser without actually seeing the film, in order to achieve far more creative freedom and room for development.
